Teach your dog basic skills

Postby Joeymydog » Thu Jul 02, 2009 3:38 pm

There are 4 basic skills your dog should learn:
Sit
Stay
heel
lay down

To teach sit use postive reinfocements. Grab a yummy treat and your dog. Get your dog's attention. SHow him a treat and have him stand in front of you. Tell him to 'Sit' By gently push his bottom down with you hand right when his bottom hits the ground reward him with a treat. Right now it doesn't matter how long he sits you just need him to sit. Repeat this process 10 times. Then tell him to sit. but wait 10 secounds until you reward then give him the treat. If he gets up during the 10 secounds restart. do this 10 times :D

To Teach stay tell your dog to Sit. Put your hand out in front and say stay. For the first time just stand in front of him/her. With your hand out and treat him. Then after 5v times back up 3 feet and tell him to stay for 10 times and reward keep walking backward untill you get to about 20 feet. Once he has that down. Go to him give im ONE signal of stay and turn your back and walk. HE should stay if not restart and remember to treat/reward if he does it right if he did it wroung DO NOT treat.

To heel grab a leash and have him next to you on your left side ALWAYS! Always left side. when you stop put him to a sit. So walk 4feet andstop when you stop tell him to sit or push his bottom to the ground. Go 4feet then heel 4feet then heel then go longer and longer and heel. It's a matter of time and attention.

To Lay down tell your dog to sit. There are two differnt ways see which one works for you. take the treat to his nose and put it to the ground. he should lay dow if not. The other way that works is pick up his feet and make him lay. reapeat 10 times.

Yep you can! The earlier you start the quicker they'll pick up on the training.
Just start simple and remember that dogs learn in simple steps, so to get them to play dead you first have to teach them to lay down, etc.

Good Luck!
